Summary: Telus and Bell have announced they will be GSM carriers by 2010.

Finally, and end to the drought of good handsets for us Telus and Bell customers. While I can’t really see any appreciable speed difference between a CDMA and a GSM device, I do know that I like a SIM card sitting between me and my carrier and with CDMA that’s just not gonna happen.

Our friends over at BlackBerry Cool are carrying a story about it. I, for one, and pretty happy about it. This means that when my contract runs out close to 2010 I may not necessarily have to move to Roger’s to start enjoying all the Linux smartphones that are making their way onto main street.

TELUS and BELL are not going GSM as it is older second generation technology. Instead, they are moving towards HSPA to compliment their existing 3G network to assist in their evolution to 4G LTE.

This will allow a much broader selection of devices compared to Rogers, along with increased global roaming. Not to mention higher data transfer speeds than Rogers too!

Hi Robert,

Thanks for clarifying that. I noticed in the comments of the BlackBerry Cool post I linked to that another user had made this correction but I neglected to carry the correction over to my post.

The exciting thing for me is that SIM card (or applicable) that separates my handset from the provider. Do HSPA handsets have a SIM card?
