In my business, I go through servers like the rest of the planet goes through socks. I am in a perpetual need of development servers, testing servers and just basic disposable servers. I frequently use VPSes as they are fairly inexpensive, quick to deploy, and easy to get rid of. However, the billing is not really rigged to support guys like me that need a server for a couple of days or even a couple of hours.
Enter GoGrid – servers by the hour.
GoGrid is a web service that can literally commission a new server (Linux or Windows) in minutes. I can then do whatever I need to do with it for a few hours, a few days, or permanently. I pay for the server by how long is in existence. When I am done with it, I kill it and my billing stops. It’s brilliant.
Pricing runs on a concept called RAM hours.
Simply put, server a RAM-Hour is the total amount of RAM you have deployed multiplied by the number of hours it’s been deployed.
Prices start at 9 cents per hour for a 500MB RAM 1CPU Xeon server with 30GB of disk space.
GoGrid also offers cloud storage along with its servers. Each server comes with 10GB at no extra cost and more is available starting from 15 cents er GB per month. The cloud storage can be hooked up to your system using SCP, FTP, SAMBA/CIFS, and RSYNC which makes it pretty useful to just about anyone.
